Fall Gardening Tips

Mulch

Mulching in the fall can help prevent weeds, soil erosion, and temperature & moisture shifts.

Plant Trees and Shrubs

Planting trees and shrubs in the fall allow the roots to grow strong before the summer heat.

Consider Sunlight When Planting

Provide enough sunlight for plants with roots and fruits needing the most sunlight.

Choose regionally adapted plants, considering plants that will grow well in your

environment (sun, shade, etc.).

Cover Crops

Covering crops can improve soil health and your harvest the following season.

Sow seeds by hand after lightly tilling the soil and cover them with a thin layer of soil.

Amend the Soil

The soil is still warm and workable in the fall, making it easier to add compost and oxygen.

Till the soil to encourage nutrient flow and root growth.

Divide Perenials

Once perennials have finished flowering, dig them up, divide them and add a fresh layer of mulch around them.
